What Is a Hydrographic or Bathymetric Survey

A bathymetric survey maps the depth and contours of a lake, river, or reservoir bottom, the underwater equivalent of a topographic survey on dry land. Hydrographic surveying is the broader term, encompassing:

Shoreline features
Water depth
Other physical characteristics of a water body

Together, this data gives engineers, permitting agencies, and property owners an accurate picture of what's actually beneath the surface, which is information that satellite imagery and aerial mapping simply can't provide.

Dock and Encroachment Permitting on Idaho's Navigable Lakes

The Idaho Department of Lands regulates docks, boat lifts, and other structures on the state's 61 navigable lakes under the Idaho Lake Protection Act, including:

Encroachment permit applications for new or modified docks often require depth data to confirm the structure meets navigation and setback requirements. Because our Coeur d'Alene office sits in the middle of this lake country, we're positioned to provide bathymetric data for individual dock and marina permit applications, a scope of work that larger hydrographic firms typically aren't set up to take on.

Dredging and Reservoir Capacity Studies

Bathymetric surveys are also the starting point for dredging projects and reservoir capacity studies, where sediment buildup can quietly reduce a reservoir's usable volume over time. Comparing a current bathymetric survey against historical data shows exactly how much capacity has been lost and where sediment has accumulated, giving irrigation districts, municipalities, and private landowners the data they need to plan dredging or maintenance work.

How We Collect Bathymetric Data

For most smaller-scale projects, our approach combines:

Single-beam echo sounder equipment to collect depth readings across a water body
GNSS survey equipment to tie every depth reading to a precise horizontal and vertical location

This approach is well suited to the smaller lakes, reservoirs, and river sections most of our clients are working with, without the cost overhead of the larger multibeam systems built for commercial marine charting.

Hydrographic Surveys and Flood Risk

Bathymetric data also feeds into flood risk analysis along rivers and reservoirs, since accurate channel depth and capacity data help determine how a waterway will behave during high flow events. Where a project calls for it, we can pair hydrographic survey data with our flood and FEMA survey work to give a complete picture of a site's water-related risk.
